Faux rock is made from a combination of cementatious and fibrous materials. There are two main construction methods – casting or sculpting.
In casting, molds are made from real rock to produce realistic synthetic stones and rock panels and rocks.
Manufacturers make the molds by applying a liquid from of rubber to real rock. When it hardens, it is peeled off and used as the base to add texture, color and coatings.
For sculpted rock, layers of cementatious materials are applied to a framework of rebar and lath. Hand tools are used to sculpt the faux rock into a desired shape. This is often the method used for cantilevered or tall rock formations.
Styles include traditional brick hues, flagstone and limestone, cliff rock and fractured rock. There are many varieties of rock styles that can be created with simple changes such as adding a texture or color.
A range of rich, earthy colors and stains are available to add warmth and dimension.
